Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) has advanced rapidly over the last few years. It promises to
empower law enforcement, streamline recruitment, speed up immigration, prevent identity fraud
and much more. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has already invited bids for the cre-
ation of a national facial recognition system to support law enforcement and identify a potential
threat. Another proposed programme called ‘Digi Yatra’ will enable better flow management at
airports. While these programmes are potentially positive, the ulterior opportunities presented
by this technology is alarming.
